Tuberville Out As Head Coach
Tommy Tuberville's 10-year tenure at Auburn has come to an end.
Four days after the worst loss in his AU career, a 36-0 thrashing at Alabama, Tuberville has resigned as Auburn's head coach.
Tuberville had an 85-40 record in 10 years at Auburn. "The last 10 years have been a great time in my life, both professionally and personally," Tuberville said. "It's been a great place to coach and live, and we've had a lot of success along the way. I'm going to remain in Auburn and help the Auburn family however I can. I'm very appreciative of the coaches, players, staff and Auburn fans over the last decade."
The news broke at approximately 4 p.m. CT, shortly after Tuberville and Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs returned from a meeting. Tuberville addressed the team at 6 p.m.
"Tommy and I have had the opportunity to discuss the direction of the program," Jacobs said. "Through those discussions, Tommy felt it would be in his and the program's best interest to step aside as Auburn's head football coach.
"We appreciate everything Tommy has done for this program, this university and the Auburn community over the last 10 years. He has established a strong foundation to build upon and we thank him for the standard he set. We wish Tommy and his family—wife Suzanne, and sons Tucker and Troy—nothing but the best."
According to a release sent out by Auburn, Tuberville's $6 million buyout will be fulfilled, from which no state or university funds will be used. All assistant and contractual staff will be paid according to their respective contracts.
Tuberville's contract specifies that he will receive $3 million within 30 days of his termination and another $3 million in one year.
A press conference with Jacobs will be held at 11 a.m. CT in the Athletic Complex Auditorium on Thursday. The press conference will be closed to the public.
Even with his 5-7 record in 2008, Tuberville finishes as one of Auburn's most successful head coaches. His 85 wins rank fourth in AU history behind only Shug Jordan (176), Mike Donahue (99) and Pat Dye (99).
Tuberville's best season came in 2004 when he led the Tigers to a 13-0 record and SEC Championship, his only one in 14 years of coaching in the SEC at Ole Miss and Auburn. Auburn finished No. 2 in 2004 after No. 1 USC beat then-No. 2 Oklahoma in the BCS Championship game.
Tuberville won the SEC West title in 2000, falling 28-6 to Florida in the SEC Championship game, and won SEC West co-titles in 2001, 2002 and 2005.
